City of Corona History

Corona, formerly named South Riverside, was established at the pinnacle of the citrus business in the year 1886, and is beneficially located at the high end of the Valley of Santa Ana River which is an important passage to the mountains of Santa Ana. Formerly the world’s Lemon Capital, the name Corona was established due to the inquisitive design of its roads, with a standard grid encompassed by the spherical Grand Boulevards, 4.43 kilometers or 2.75 miles in circumference. The layout of the street was created by Hiram Clay Kellog, a civil engineer based in Anaheim, and who was an influential person in the initial expansion of Orange County. South Riverside Land and Water Company also established Corona as town. This land and water company was founded in the year 1886 founded by Samuel Merrill, the ex-governor of Iowa, B. Taylor, A.S. Garreston, Adolph Rimpau, and George L. Joy. Initially called the Orange Grower’s Organization, it bought the territories of Rancho La Sierra and Rancho Temescal; Thus, the South Riverside colony was laid out. The organization also fortified the water rights to the creek of Temescal, its branches, and Lee Lake. There are lots of dams and pipelines that were designed to bring the water supply to the colony. In the year 1889, Temescal Water Company was integrated in order to deliver water for the colony. The company also bought the entire water bearing properties near the Temescal Valley, and started drilling artesian wells.

Corona was originally situated in San Bernardo, and obtained its first post office on August 11, 1887. In the year 1983, Corona became a portion of the novel county of Riverside. Also in the year 1818, South Riverside changed to Corona due to the circular design of Grand Boulevard, and where three international car races were held.
