About Riverside, CA

The City of Riverside was founded by John W. North in the year 1870. John North was assisted by a group of Easterners with the goal of establishing a colony dedicated to furthering education and culture, the land for which Riverside was built on was once a Spanish rancho. There were transplants from both England and Canada that brought with them traditions and activities which were adopted by many prosperous citizens; the very first golf course and polo field in the Southern California area were built in Riverside.

In 1871 the first orange trees were planted, although the citrus industry in Riverside did not begin until two years later when two Brazilian navel orange trees were sent to Eliza Tibbets by her friend at the Department of Agriculture in Washington. Southern California had a climate which allowed the trees to thrive and the navel orange industry rapidly grew.

In a few short years, cultivation of the recently discovered navel orange led to what many considered a gold rush of a different kind, the development of the citrus industry, which has been memorialized in the landscapes and exhibits of California Citrus State Historic Park and the many restored packing around the Downtown Marketplace District. Riverside was home to almost half of the over five hundred thousand citrus trees in California. By the year 1895 refrigerated railroad cars and advancing watering systems established Riverside, CA as the wealthiest city per capita in the state.

The amazing climate and landscapes continue to create Riverside’s Mediterranean paradise. There continues to be a strong sense of community support directed at the historic preservation of a city with such a storied past and that continues to build on such a firm foundation.
